Or, should I say, “How rigged is BIG BROTHER?”

Although the whole reality TV industry is based on, well, reality, we all know that our so-called reality programs tend to fudge things a little. Of course, we don't really want reality or we wouldn't be watching TV. What we want to see is people, presumably like us, edited to seem either a) really dumb, b) totally obnoxious, or c) triumphant and larger than life. The boom of reality TV was a result of the information age; with so much reality available to us, what need to do we have for fiction? Viewers are able to envision themselves in the same situations as the biggest reality stars. The same can't be said of a fictional drama. I don't really see myself living in a mansion in Newport Beach and routinely making out with Mischa Barton, but I could easily win a million dollars on SURVIVOR.

Producers of reality shows are well aware of the appeal of their shows and they edit them accordingly. This is the one form of trickery that almost all viewers both recognize and accept. People, or “characters”, are manipulated in editing to suit the needs of a show. Usually, either the most positive or negative aspects of a person are accentuated, to create a hero, villain, or any number of other tried and true conflict-inherent personas. BIG BROTHER is different.

With 24 hour live feeds and three episodes per week, CBS's ability to manipulate was supposed to be gone. I mean, isn't that the whole thought process behind the Orwellian “Big Brother”, that every moment of existence is monitored? BIG BROTHER 7: ALL-STARS has not lived up to this billing. Those with the live feeds are especially aware of this; CBS has allowed itself to deceive their fans.

Oftentimes, flames will appear on your live internet feed for BIG BROTHER. Sometimes it's understandable; a HouseGuest may be singing a pop song that CBS does not have the rights to. However, feeds have been turning to flames for hours on end for no particular reason. What goes on during these times?

We can't know, and we'll never know. However, the flames are indicative of the fact that CBS is not interested in true realism with BIG BROTHER, but only in the appearance of realism. There have been a number of instances on BIG BROTHER 7: ALL-STARS that have been shady at best and downright deceitful at worst. Here are some of the most egregious examples:

(*Note: Much of this is speculation. However, speculation is all we have. CBS will never share their secrets and contestants have signed away their rights to full disclosure.)

What Goes On In The Diary Room?

Diary Room sessions are the ultimate mystery on BIG BROTHER. We watch on the feeds as HouseGuests are intermittently called to the DR to create fodder for the network broadcasts. For every clip that the national TV audience sees, there are reels and reels of unused footage that only a chosen few CBS employees witness. HouseGuests are not allowed to discuss their DR sessions with the others, although a few tidbits have escaped their lips every now and then. We know that the HouseGuests are often asked to re-phrase comments and opinions to suit the producers needs. HouseGuests are also implored to give exposition-filled explanations of house events.

These are the kind of mildly dubious reality show actions that we have come to expect. However, how easy would it be for producers to go even further in the DR and manipulate the game however they see fit? For instance, I've always had my theory that CBS's favorite HouseGuests are tipped off to the nature of challenges in the DR. Also, what is stopping CBS from alerting a favored HouseGuest to any scheming going on behind their back. Knowledge is power, and producers have the ability to dispense as much knowledge to favored HouseGuests as they please.

What's In The Power Of Veto Bag Of Balls?

When the Head of Household brings out the bag of balls that selects the Power of Veto players, is there anything that assures us of what the balls say? How can we know that certain HouseGuests, who the producers wish not to compete, aren't mysteriously absent from the bag?

The Initial 20, And Subsequent 14

CBS gave themselves a ton of wiggle room with their All-Star nomination system of America picking half of the HouseGuests and CBS choosing the other half. It was an ingenious ploy that allowed CBS to create the exact BIG BROTHER season that they wanted. Since every All-Star is a (somewhat) known commodity, CBS was able to see who America picked and then tailor their own picks based upon who they thought would best interact with each other. We can't fault CBS for this system, but we can be suspicious of the initial twenty who were nominated for BIG BROTHER 7.

Here's the breakdown for those interested:

BIG BROTHER 1: 1 Nominee

BIG BROTHER 2: 4 Nominees (sans Bunky – 3 Nominees)

BIG BROTHER 3: 3 Nominees

BIG BROTHER 4: 3 Nominees

BIG BROTHER 5: 4 Nominees (sans Cowboy – 3 Nominees)

BIG BROTHER 6: 5 Nominees

Hmm, do we see a pattern here? There are a couple of the nominated 20 that neither CBS nor any sane fan wanted in the house; Cowboy from BB 5 and Bunky from BB2. So, now we're down to a pool of 18, from which 14 will go on the show.

I believe that, from the get-go, CBS knew exactly who they wanted on the show (those from the most recent seasons), who they thought would attract the largest audience (Janelle, Will), and who they wanted to set up with built-in alliances (Sov4, ChillTown). When it comes down to it, America's vote didn't mean a whole lot.

Will's Involvement

Can you imagine this season without Dr. Will? It'd be terrible. CBS knew this, as did the Good Doctor. The problem was, it seemed, that Will wasn't all too enthusiastic about re-entering the BB house. For the first couple of weeks, Will constantly complained about everything and seemed to be generally unhappy. Lately, he's gotten in his groove, but you still have to wonder, “What did CBS tell him that got him in the house?” Just this week, the feeds showed Will talking to Janelle about CBS agreeing to put Will on THE AMAZING RACE if he agreed to do ALL-STARS. I'm all for having Will in the house (he's my favorite HouseGuest ever), but if he's in there under mitigating circumstances, I want to know.

Re-doing the Head of Household Competition

In what will surely go down as the biggest travesty in BIG BROTHER history, Erika was stripped of Head of Household just hours after winning it in front of a live national audience. The reason: defective buzzers. However, the buzzers weren't all that defective. The controversy started when Howie didn't hit his buzzer hard enough in a timed-answer event. It didn't register and he was eliminated from the competition. No one else really had problems with the buzzer; it worked when you hit it hard. When Erika eventually won the competition, Howie whined and whined about how unfair the whole thing was. CBS, in an unprecedented move, decided to REPLAY the whole thing. This has never happened before and likely will never again. Why did they do it?

Simple. Erika would have targeted Janelle who, barring a PoV win, would have been voted out. CBS couldn't risk losing their golden goose; Janelle had to stay. What other explanation is there? If they wanted to be fair, they could have replayed the competition from the exact point where Howie was on. That makes sense. Re-playing the entire event doesn't.

Splitting of Money?

Another new wrinkle to this year's game, that us viewers weren't initially privy to, is that HouseGuests are allowed, legally, to split prize money. This has been banned in seasons past, but has been mysteriously allowed for the BIG BROTHER ALL-STARS. Why? There are a couple of possible reasons.

One, given many of the HouseGuests pre-existing relationships, it gave players the option of forming secret alliances prior to entering the BIG BROTHER house. Two, it let's players go out on a limb and attempt riskier tactics if their bets are slightly hedged. Mostly, it's the principle of the matter. Why would this new rule be enacted in such a hush-hush manner? What was the deciding factor within the walls of CBS that changed a six-year old doctrine?

CG's Power of Veto

With Chicken George facing almost certain eviction weeks back, he clutched up and produced an unimaginable Power of Veto victory to his save his hide.

Well, it would certainly appear that way had one not witnessed the competition.

George's victory came in an event unlike any other this season; one based totally on desperation. The producers knew that George would have no problem inhaling a bowl of slop and shaving his head. They knew that he would agree to eat slop for the entire season. They also knew that George's unique brand of down-home stupidity and utter weirdness garners a considerable amount of home viewers. So, what did CBS do? Save him by creating a challenge that they KNEW George would win.

Keeping the Blonde

Every time I reflect back upon this season of BIG BROTHER and ponder what has transpired, one thought enters my brain: CBS is doing everything they can to keep Janelle on air. For some reason (I am not a Janelle supporter; don't hate her, don't particularly like her, think she's pretty dumb), Janelle has a monstrous following in America. I don't get it, but I know that if she were to be evicted, BIG BROTHER's ratings would take a significant hit. Whether it's entering the house with a pre-made alliance of four, being the only “hot” girl in the house, winning a large quantity of Head of Households, winning the one Erika should have, and generally getting the amount of attention she gets, I can't help but think that the odds have been stacked in her favor from the beginning.

I'd like to believe that Janelle's success has been completely her own doing, but it certainly doesn't feel that way. Think about if she had come into the house in Diane's situation (who, for the record, is hotter than Janelle). It goes without question that she would be targeted and eliminated within the first couple of weeks. Yeah, yeah, she could win the Head of Household over and over but, again, had the competitions not been created to her strengths (and if all the HouseGuests tried to win and not throw every comp), she'd be a middle of the road player.

To sum it up, there are far too many suspicious happenings going on this season to chalk it up as a fluke. CBS has perverted the realism of BIG BROTHER and turned it into another slickly edited reality show that likes to pull the wool over it's audiences eyes.

That said, I'm still enjoying the hell out of BIG BROTHER. I guess I'm just a sucker for good fiction.

Only correction I'd make is that there was clearly a defect in the buzzers of Erika's lost HOH. Even before Howie was eliminated, Mike Boogie passed through a round without his light coming on.

As far as the buzzer problems during the HOH comp, several people in the house complained that their buzzers didn't work properly.

I don't think the names in the POV bag are rigged. It would be too obvious if there were too few names in the bag.

You say that the comps play to Janelle's strengths, but if that's the case then her strength is intelligence and I guess there are others that are lacking. She won a number of comps that were fair game and NOT weighted towards a specific person, whereas the Chicken George comp was totally fixed.

All reality shows are skewed and edited to be more entertaining and I'm okay with that. Several seasons of Big Brother became SOOOOO boring and hard to watch towards the end of the run that I stop watching and just read the summaries. Why? Because all of the interesting people got voted out. So I say hooray! Rig the shit out of the show because I am loving this season.

Oh and snaggle-tooth Diane should be so lucky as to look as hot as Janelle on Janelle's worst day.

From the live feeds, I would say it all has to do with the "cry baby" factor as all the competitors feel that they are the main attraction and some have been using threats to make the producers jump through hoops for them.

First, Will was complaining about how boring the season was and how he just wanted to get sent home. Now, he is gang busters and is talking about The Amazing Race.

Second, there was the Chicken George situation. Everyone in the house hated him and were extremely vocal about that fact and the fact that he didn't deserve to be there. Especially James, or so it seemed. Then all of a sudden, everyone loves him and is talking about how great he is and how he deserves to be in the game.

Third, you have the HOH competition with the "faulty" buzzers. Immediately after, Howie threw a huge hissy fit and stated that he would throw competitions and make every effort to make the show un-entertaining.

How did the producers respond to at least two of these situations?...flames on the live feeds...then return to find that everyone is happy and getting their way.

I agree that Janelle may be favored by the powers that be but it is pretty hard to rig a comp. Janelle's HOH wins showed nothing about her ability to play the game. Let's factor in that half the house was tanking the comps to avoid being a target. The first one, Howie pushed the rock thing into Danielle instead of Janelle, pure luck. Howie could have easily pushed it into Janelle and she would have lost. The 2nd one, Janelle wasn't chosen to be eliminated. Ericka chose George to eliminate again pure luck. Now granted she had to give the correct answers but standing next to Marcellas, I really believe he threw it to her. I also believe Boogie threw her the re-do comp. But she did have to have the correct answers which we all know she excels at that type of competition.

Will has also mentioned on the live feeds, several times, that he is putting together his own show with CBS. He said it was about his doctor practice and he will have "guest" clients. Regarding "The Amazing Race" ... Will said that he was given the "go ahead" by CBS to pick his partner.
It seems like a realtionship to me.

Besides Janelle went out on a wrong answer not a buzzer malfunction.

Also, A POV would not have saved Janelle that week because she gave up that right in the graveyard comp.

If not for that "buzzer malfunction" Janelle was definitely on her way out that week. BB knew that because Erika was talking on the feeds right after the HOH saying that she was putting Janelle up and knew that she couldn't save herself because she sold her POV rights.

Jannelle is def. hotter and has beautiful eyes but asid from tht u saw her play in BB 6 she won 3 hohs too... so if she won it last season she can win it this season.

I agree with all of these statements. I truly think this season is rigged. Big Brother 1-6? Probably not.

I can't remember what houseguest said it after being evicted....but he/she alluded to the fact that the bag of balls felt very light.

Keep this in mind however, the producers are only rigging the show so that people will continue to watch it. So yes, if Janelle (America's favorite) or Will (America's bad boy hearthrob) were evicted early, the ratings would PLUMMET and NOBODY would watch. A house with only Diane and Chicken George (as much as I love him) would not garner a lot of viewership.

If they were rigging things to make the game more interesting, the likes of Chicken George, Boogie, and Erika would be long gone by now. Why would they kick Alison out week 1, if they wanted the heightened drama? She was Janelle's #1 Villain.

The producers don't care enough to rig this show. The ratings aren't that good, and the cast members are awful at acting. I think it's just an attempt to explain how Janelle and Will, who most predicted would be gone by now, are both still around.

I don't know if it's rigged or not. I would like to think not, but I think the possibility exists. Honestly though, all of your assertions could easily be argued point by point so I don't think the case presented is solid. As far as the contestants who entered the house, we all knew CBS would have a big had in that. Of course they are going to want to put the most popular HGs in and Dr. Will and the Sov 6 were unquestionably the most popular with America. After that, it's just a matter of getting in the right mix with them to make it interesting.

The faulty buzzers clearly were faulty. It was shown that MULTIPLE HGs had trouble with the buzzers and several even admitted that they did not work properly. I was surprised by the redo, but it seemed only fair. And are you seriously comparing James voodoo doll fit to the HOH comp? The proof was very clear that James was wrong--why on earth would they do a redo??

The statement though that completely removes all credibility from your argument though is the comment about Diane being hotter than Janelle. Yikes, what kind of goggles are you looking through?? Have you seen Diane's "modeling" shots??? Even the guys on Diane's season talked down about her looks. They ALL teased Drew about being with someone beneath him. I think it's time for a "reality" check.

I agree about the show being rigged to a certain extent however, I disagree with you about Janelle being the beneficiary. Will would fit that criteria. How is it that the most deceptive, lying, cheating, backstabbing players (Chill Town) in the game haven't left the house yet? With rarely winning any compitions, throwing HOH's (until recently), and going back and forth on alliances with all the the HG's yet they have been untouchable. All they have to do is sit back and wait it out while others (Janelle) are going full force on the challenges. I do believe Janelle is a great player/competitor of this game. She knows it all too well. She carries a huge audience but so does Will. He is the guy you love to hate...or just hate to love. He made BB a reality fave after his season. If there is any rigging going on, I believe it would be more in his favor than hers. Unlike Will, Janelle has to actually bust her butt to stay in it.

ok, Let's not forget that if the shoe was on the other foot, the HOH would of been redone, Janelle did answer wrong, But Boogies buzzer never went on, so He should of been eliminated, who knows what he answered, OK, so WHy let him stay? AND the VOODoo dall, James cleary said "Here take it then", Knowing he had the wrong doll, then janelle and him BOTH grabbed at the "M" doll...cleary a fair fight...And I although loved Diane, NO way is she better then Janelle, Diane could not win crap, was her fault, and For the ratings, JAMES the Snake had me watching waiting to see when Chilltown was gonna BOOT his azz, so ratings would of stayed, even though Janelle had busted her azz, people are still trying to bring up questions, even when they RE-done the HOH, all had the same shot of winning...FOr the most part, WHo knows why BB6 kept chilltown in the game, maybe CBS did ask them too, BUt CBS can only ask them to, doesn't mean they will do anything they are told, everything in LIFE can raise questions, everything, Like this one time I Lost 20.00 after a week earlier I laughed at this woman at work that lost 5.00 in the vending machine. DO you think she rigged it for me to loose 20.00?, PLEASE give me a break, and YOU did loose crediability when you said Diane was better looking then Janelle!!

VERY IMPORTANT
Something NOT shown on the last POV (the doll/tiki one) was the reading of the RULES. Dani and James BOTH had problems with Janelle being physical with them. Dani went in the DR and asked for clarification of the rules. The rules stated NO CONTACT except for INCIDENTAL CONTACT. Dani and James BOTH said that Janie wrestled(NOT incidental)them for dolls. Janie admitted on the live feeds that she wrestled a doll from Dani and we saw James and Janie wrestling. She cheated and she should have been eliminated with the first offense and anyone else who broke rules should have been eliminated too(James).

I could not agree with you more, especially the part about the diary sessions and producers feeding Janelle information. Did you see last night before the HOH competition when she pushed Boogie into the weight room to ask him something about the order someone's key was pulled? How did she know the competition was going to be about sequence? Does anyone else find that ironic? It's so obvious that someone is prepping her. I'm really glad their plan backfired last night but I'm sure veto will be tailored for her, just wait!

And whether Diane or Janelle is hotter: who cares? Why does that spur more debate than the rigging of the show? Bottom line is apparently we have forgotten that there is no right or wrong answer? It's subjective people!

I agree with you. I have always thought this season was rigged. The veto bag who plays, the veto game itself, all of it. But i love the show. I am looking forward to see next season a non all star. i am not a janelle fan and i want her out i dont think people will stop watching the show. but it is a great season rigged or not.

Ok without Janalle and Will how many of us would be enjoying the show like we are. They are DYNAMITE. they should be offered a sitcom after this . They should be on the Amazing race. They should be together. Chemistry like none of us have seen in ages. Old fashion sexual chemistry. LOVE IT.
They are great and even if CBS if rigging it to keep them there SO WHAT it is the best thing on TV right not. The Will and Janelle hour. We love it!!!!!

Some of the responses to this article are borderline disturbing. All the author said was that he's not a Janelle supporter and speculated that CBS might be slanting the competition towards her (with good reason to suppose so) and he gets attacked with comments that are downright insulting. It's pretty sad that anyone would fly off the handle and accuse someone of having no credibility just because they don't like their favorite reality show contestant. Get a grip on it.

Oh, and I agree that Diane is hotter than Janelle. So what? We're entitled to our opinions. I don't care that you all think Janelle is hotter, and I'm sure the author of the article doesn't either, so why are some of you freaking out over the fact that other people prefer Diane?

I am in complete agreement with the author. I have read many of you saying that this season would be boring if Jani and Will had been booted earlier. I say hogwash. You forget many of the players that got booted, at the hands of Jani and Will. Jase, Nakomis, Allison even Kaysar. Come on if they had not gone, I think this show would have been more interesting. Then Boogie gets the coup de tat and doesn't use it on Jani when he had the chance too, yeah it's fixed and it's really disappointing.

As for HOH and Veto comps, of course they are completedly slanted towards Janie. And after seeing the videos and reading the updates, the producers are tipping Janie off as to what the competition will be. Just tonight, everyone will see her win the Morph competition in 1 minute. Prior to the competition, the feeds showed her studying the houseguests pictures. Now how would she know that she had to study the wall at that time. Because she has been tipped off. I was already convinced when the HOH comp was redone. I was so looking forward to Jani being kicked out. I agree with the Balls in the Bag. How they managed to just pick all men for the veto comp that George partook in was miraculous.

This show has been become too obvious and too boring to see where this final is going.

I truly am so disappointed that the only reason I am still watching it is because their really isn't anything else on. If there was, I'd be gone in a hearbeat.

Jani is the worst actress on the planet, trying to pretend she's "nervous". Erika keeps almost cracking up when she's having "dilemmas" while talking to Boogie (they've been living together for 6 mos. prior to the show, p.s., trust me that I know).

At least they have Playboy to fall back on.

Sure some of the competitions seem a little favored to certain HGs (the POV George won - definately), but since Season 2, they don't change. Knowing what probably is coming up is why these people do their whole "Jedi Drilling" all the time and why Janelle wins the competitions. That's just one of the points that makes your argument unfounded and illogical. If you'd like more, I'd certainly discuss this with you.

Big Brother 7 would be a big yawn if Janelle and will had been booted early on. As for the show being rigged in Janelles favor. Have you seen how hard she has to work for the wins and by the way she does better in the comps where she has to use her brain.

Does anybody remember Season 6? Does anyone remember how hated by America the "Nerd Herd" was? If it was completely rigged, CBS would never have allowed "nerd herders" to be in the final two. That being said though, I do think that they do have influence with the types of challenges used at certain critical points in the game.

seriously people... why can't everyone grasp that you can have intellegent conversations without being idiots to other people... not everyone in the world will agree with you so don't expect them to... i mean some of these responses look and sound like they were made by a 10-year old kid. the author just stated their opinion on what they thought might be going on in the house, and opened the floor to hear what other people were thinking. i would like to thank the author of the article and all those who posted meaningful posts, because that is what this post was to inspire, peoples views of what they think is going on in the show.
i for one am skeptical about the whole show after reading all these posts... espically kevan's post about the rules of the PoV.. never the less, i'd probably still watch the show simply because it is entertaining to watch.

Rigged - how about the final comp between Boogie and Janelle. Boggie should have gone first. Janelle has worked day and night remembering order. To have her go first and "SHOW HIM" the order literally gave him the win. He would have struggled to get the order right.
THAT WAS AN UNFAIR COMPETITION.
I also think that Janie had a right to complain about the endurance comp. She said that she couldn't hear Julie tell Erica about both hands having to be on (they were on opposite sides of the volcano and Janie was still situating herself).
Both times, she didn't run to the DR and complain and whine and cry about it being unfair.

I loved this season. I remember when season one started and i thought it was the stupidist show ever and never watched it again. UNTIL this season. I watched it one day and was hooked. Will and Janelle were my favorite people in the house. I watched every week to see what will and boogie were going to do next and what lies they were going to come up with next. I will admit i totally believed it at first and after awhile i also thought it was rigged. It just always seemed that the RIGHT people were playing for Veto. None the less, i loved the show this season and will be looking forward to seeing will and janelle in other shows, which they probably will be doing with CBS. Sorry, them two couldn't have won the whole thing. Oh ya i just have to throw this in Janelle has much more sex appeal than diane does.
